A new retreat for locals with disabilities has been officially unveiled, with the new Dream Catcher Sensory Garden opened at House with No Steps at Mudgeeraba.
Member for Mudgeeraba Ros Bates said the Sensory Garden was a fantastic investment in disability services for the community.
“House with No Steps received a total of $21,000 in funding from the State Government and it’s great to see this sensory garden opened for the enjoyment of special people in our local area on International Day of People with Disability,” said Ms Bates.
“I visited this site with Minister for Disability Services Tracy Davis last year when it was just weeds and trees, but now thanks to the hard work of House with No Steps and the Carrara Lions Club, we have a beautiful Sensory Garden complete with fish ponds, arches, bridges and resting places.”
House with No Steps Service Coordinator Amber Hoy said the garden was well and truly designed by the service users themselves.
“This project began as a dream shared by all 34 participants of our service and 8 staff members,” said Ms Hoy.
“The journey from start to finish has been a wonderful experience for everyone involved, bringing the local community together and inspiring us to broaden and continue these community connections with regular morning teas to be held on site.
“I thank each and every person who contributed to our garden and commend the many voluntary hours that allowed us to officially open Dream Catcher to celebrate International Day of People with Disability.”
Carrara Lions Club grants officer David Wilman said the Lions put about 500 hours of effort into the construction of the garden, which was matched by the dedicated team at House With No Steps.
“This has been a mammoth effort by the Carrara Lions, but serving the community is what we do best and this is no exception.”
House With No Steps welcomes all visitors to their sensory garden on Friday mornings, located at 11 Hardys Road, Mudgeeraba.
