People power has forced the Labor Government into committing to a new police beat at the Gold Coast University Hospital prior to the Commonwealth Games after pressure from Ros Bates MP.
The Gold Coast continues to be ignored by the Labor Government, with a petition signed by 102 residents calling for a dedicated 24 hour Police Beat at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) falling on deaf ears.
Member for Mudgeeraba, Ros Bates MP, a registered nurse who launched the petition after witnessing violence at GCUH, said the Government’s response to the petition was simply not good enough.
“In the next three years, the population surrounding Gold Coast University Hospital will increase to that of a small regional town with a population of around 30,000 – larger than Maryborough, Mount Isa or Gympie,” said Ms Bates.
“Nearby the 750 bed Gold Coast University Hospital, we have the Gold Coast Private Hospital now open with 284 beds which will expand to 400 in line with demand, Griffith University Gold Coast with 20,000 students and staff, and the under construction Commonwealth Games Village designed for 6,500 athletes and officials.
“We need to act now to ensure that the precinct surrounding the Gold Coast’s largest hospital is secure, and that will ultimately mean ensuring an ongoing Police presence.
“Despite acknowledging this rapid population growth, the do-nothing, know-nothing Labor Government has said that one on site Police officer, a Police Station 4.2km away and a Police Beat 4.4km away are somehow enough to deter potentially sudden and unpredictable violent attacks.
“With security breaches and instances of alcohol and drug fueled violence reportedly on the rise, it is baffling that the Labor Government does not see the need for a heightened Police presence.
“I call on the Labor Government to immediately review this decision and deliver a Police Beat before more violence takes place.”
