Labor must match $1billion to fix the M1

Tuesday, 10 April 2018

Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington is calling on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to stop grand-standing and match the $1 billion of funding for the M1 announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today.

“Years of Labor neglect have turned the M1 into a car park and commuters are desperate to see investment in this road,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Malcolm Turnbull has put $1 billion on the table and Annastacia Palaszczuk should do the same in the upcoming state Budget.

“Drivers are sick of political point-scoring and just want action to fix the M1.

“If I were Premier, this would be funded in the next state Budget.

“I urge Annastacia Palaszczuk to do the same. We need new roads, not tired old arguments.”

Ms Frecklington said she would pledge the LNP’s support at a meeting with the Prime Minister later today.

She said the LNP remained committed to developing a second M1 while also investing in the existing highway.

The Federal Government’s funding offer would tackle congestion on the M1 between Varsity Lakes and Tugun, as well the Eight Miles Plains to Daisy Hill stretch.

LNP Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey said: “The LNP kick-started this project by pushing Labor to undertake the business case for the Varsity Lakes to Tugun upgrade and lobbying for federal support.

“Our community petition secured over 10,000 signatures, forcing action on this vital upgrade.”

LNP Member for Burleigh Michael Hart said: “My community has been fighting this for years and I welcome the funding. Labor must now match it and end the M1 traffic nightmare.”

LNP Member for Mudgeeraba Ros Bates said: “Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to say ‘yes’ to this offer and match the Federal Government’s $1 billion. It’s time Labor stopped squabbling and started working to fix the M1.”
