Today’s announcement by Labor to build a new shelter on the Gold Coast is too little, too late.

Over the last two and a half years we have seen thousands of domestic violence victims fleeing violent homes.

We have local private shelters standing ready to help victims but have been shut out by Labor.

One extra shelter to deal with the explosion in DV over last 12 months is a band aid on an axe wound.

On the Gold Coast the statistics are sobering with 2,278 domestic violence breaches in just 10 months. That’s 228 a month.

This is compared to 1,887 domestic violence breaches in the full year from 2015/2016.

Police are responding to almost eight breaches of domestic violence every day on the Gold Coast.

Offenders are laughing at the laws around breaches of domestic violence and this Labor Government is simply not taking action quickly enough.
