Pacific Motorway (M1) Upgrade Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes

4 May 2018

Upcoming activities and night works

Night works on the Pacific Motorway (M1) upgrade Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes (M2VL) are ongoing between 8pm and 4am Sunday to Thursday. The following activities are planned, weather permitting:

  • Locating public utility services
  • Installing traffic barriers along the motorway for the safety of roadworkers and motorists
  • Removal of old road markings and installing new linemarking
  • Removal of existing road furniture
  • Temporary road pavement construction
  • Realigning existing traffic lanes to provide more room for the construction of an additional lane
  • Installing signage
  • Clearing of vegetation
  • Drainage works.

What to expect during construction

  • Changed traffic conditions and reduced speed limits through the construction site along the motorway.
  • Traffic management devices will be in place for the duration of the works.
  • Increased construction traffic accessing work areas and site compounds from the motorway; as well as construction vehicles entering the motorway from the construction site.
  • Flashing lights and reversing beepers on construction vehicles, which are present for safety reasons.
  • Increased levels of noise, dust and vibration, both during the day and at night, due to the use of heavy construction equipment and machinery.
  • Temporary lighting towers to light work areas during the night. These towers will be directed away from surrounding properties wherever possible.

In the event that this work does not proceed because of wet weather, the works will be carried out on the next available shift.

Traffic changes

  • Traffic change 1: From Tuesday night, 8 May 2018, the speed limit will be reduced to 80km/h on the northbound lanes between Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes for the duration of the construction program for the safety of motorists and roadworkers.
  • Traffic change 2: On the following week, one lane of the northbound on-ramp under Stapley Drive Bridge to the M1 will be closed (see map below). Northbound traffic from Gemvale Road and Old Coach Road will Give Way to traffic from Burleigh Connection Road and then merge into a single lane onto the M1. The second lane on the Burleigh Connection Road on-ramp will be closed to provide more room for the construction of an additional lane and the new Stapley Drive Bridge. The concrete barrier between the motorway and on-ramp will be demolished during this process. More information will be made available closer to the time and motorists will be advised of this change in advance.

All works are expected to continue until early to mid-2018.
