A reminder of my position: I have always opposed the Reedy Creek Quarry.

Today and every day, I stand with Reedy Creek residents against a quarry in their backyard.

From the first public meeting in 2010, I have made my position clear.

I have been unwavering in opposing this quarry, shoulder‑to‑shoulder with locals and the STOP the Gold Coast Quarry group over many years.

People power matters, and it has worked previously.

I will continue to stand alongside our community in opposing the Boral quarry.

Timeline History:

19 November 2010: Labor’s Andrew Fraser and Anna Bligh declared the Boral quarry a ‘Project of State Significance’.

Pre‑2012 election: Andrew Fraser told former Burleigh MP Christine Smith he would not “call in” the quarry, meaning he would not use the State’s power to take over the decision and stop the project.

20 December 2013: The Coordinator‑General released their report.

18 July 2014: Gold Coast City Council rejected Boral’s application.

11 August 2014: Boral lodged an appeal in the Planning & Environment Court.

14 August 2014: Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney confirmed he would not “call in” the project, meaning he would let the normal council and court processes run.

29 September 2014: The deadline for the State to issue a call‑in notice passed — and because Boral had already appealed, a call‑in was no longer legally possible.

29 April 2014: Annastacia Palaszczuk told the STOP the Gold Coast Quarry group that Labor would stop the quarry if elected. This promise was never delivered.

2015: Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk publicly repeated that Labor would stop the quarry, but on 12 April 2015, Deputy Premier Jackie Trad admitted the Government could not call the project in.

August 2014–2016: The legal case continued, with a six‑week hearing scheduled from 17 Oct 2016.

4 May 2017: The Planning & Environment Court upheld Council’s decision to reject Boral’s quarry.

4 April 2025: Boral lodge a new development application for the Reedy Creek quarry with the Gold Coast City Council (Application number: COM/2025/101).

1 May 2025: I speak against the new application on the floor of Queensland Parliament (read my remarks here).

15 January 2026: The Public Notification period commences, allowing 15 business days for residents to make a submission to Council about the new quarry application.

16 February 2026: Proposed call-in notice published. Written representations must be made by 3 March 2026. For more information, click here.

3 March 2026: Public submissions to support the call-in have now closed. The Deputy Premier will make a decision after considering all submissions and relevant planning matters.

My position

I opposed the quarry in 2010. I opposed it through every step. I oppose it today. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t. Our community’s lifestyle and health come first.

I’ll always back Reedy Creek residents, and I’ll always oppose the Boral quarry.
