More than 21,000 people on the Gold Coast are out of work and facing a bleak Christmas, according to ABS regional unemployment figures released today.

The Gold Coast now has more unemployed residents than any other Queensland area measured by the ABS – way ahead of the next highest total of 14,000 recorded in the Brisbane South area.

LNP Shadow Treasurer and Deputy Leader Tim Mander said rising unemployment was proof that the Palaszczuk Labor Government is not working for the Gold Coast.

“Queensland has the highest unemployment rate in the nation and the Gold Coast is bearing the brunt,” Mr Mander said.

“The Gold Coast should be a jobs powerhouse, but its unemployment rate of 5.8% is well above the national average of 5.3%.

“Labor has failed to get Queensland working and the outlook is not positive, with survey after survey showing a slump in confidence not seen since the GFC.

“Unemployed Queenslanders are paying the price for Labor’s nine new and increased taxes and its cuts to urgently-needed infrastructure.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk is holding the Gold Coast back and it’s clear that only an LNP Government will unlock the city’s potential.

“The LNP will create more jobs on the Gold Coast by immediately starting work on the Second M1 and giving business a no-new-tax guarantee.

“While Labor look after themselves, the LNP will work for everyday Queenslanders.”
