MEDIA STATEMENT: Design begins on key Gold Coast Transport Plan bridge upgrade project

  • The Crisafulli Government has begun the design phase of the Hope Island Road bridges duplication at Jabiru Island.
  • Surveyors are on site completing investigations to support planning and development of the key Gold Coast Transport Plan infrastructure project.
  • The Jabiru Island bridge project will duplicate the Coombabah Creek Bridge and flood relief channel bridge to help reduce traffic congestion and cater to future demand.

The Crisafulli Government is getting on with delivering the Gold Coast Transport Plan with design and site investigations now underway on the congestion-busting Jabiru Island bridges duplication project.

After a decade of decline, where the former Labor Government allowed the bridges to turn into a carpark, surveyors are now on the site of the key infrastructure project on Hope Island Road collecting information to inform design.

Site investigations including geotechnical works and utility investigations to continue into early 2027.

The project will deliver two new bridges, including duplication of the 236-metre Coombabah Creek Bridge and the 194-metre flood relief channel bridge, to complete the missing four-lane link of Hope Island Road.

By increasing capacity and improving traffic flow, the upgrade will help locals get home safer and sooner by addressing congestion along a critical northern Gold Coast corridor, particularly around the Crescent Avenue intersection.

The commencement of design for the bridge duplication marks an important milestone in delivering the Crisafulli Government’s Gold Coast Transport Plan and building the transport network needed to support the region’s growth.

The Gold Coast Transport Plan is a pipeline of generational road and transport infrastructure projects that will support the city’s growing population, improve connectivity across the network, and help prepare the Gold Coast for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Jabiru Island Bridge project also supports the Queensland Government’s 2032 Delivery Plan by strengthening transport links, improving network resilience and delivering lasting benefits for residents and visitors beyond 2032.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Brent Mickelberg, said the Gold Coast Transport Plan was about getting people home sooner and safer.

“We’re getting on with the job on delivering the infrastructure the Gold Coast needs, after a decade of decline,” Minister Mickelberg said.

“The Jabiru Island bridge duplication is one of many road and rail projects being delivered for the Gold Coast.

“While the former State Labor Government took the Gold Coast for granted, we are getting on with getting the city moving again through the Gold Coast Transport plan.”

Member for Broadwater David Crisafulli said the project would ease congestion.

“We’re delivering the Gold Coast Transport Plan for the infrastructure needed now and for the future of the Gold Coast, to get residents home sooner and safer,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“For too long traffic has been gridlocked, this delivers the missing four-lane link on Hope Island Road, to get traffic flowing again.

“Together with the light rail extension to Harbour town, Coomera Connector stage two and our new metro-style services, we’re delivering the roads and rail to build the Gold Coast’s future.”
