Notification #86 – Project update and upcoming construction activities

Pacific Motorway (M1) – Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes upgrade

31 January 2020

Southbound traffic alignment to temporarily change – mid-February

In the 5.7-kilometre section of the M1 between Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) and Varsity Lakes (Exit 85), live traffic and construction are sharing the full width of the alignment, with traffic being moved around the construction zones as the works progress.

With the upgrade works in the median between Mudgeeraba and Robina now nearly complete, the alignment of the southbound lanes in this section will temporarily change in mid-February through until mid-2020.

  • Southbound traffic from Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) to Robina (Exit 82) will temporarily move west alongside the northbound lanes. Upgrade works will then start in the current southbound lanes.
  • The southbound Robina (Exit 82) off-ramp will be extended to meet this new alignment.

This temporary traffic shift is expected to be a minor change for drivers, with the speed limit in this area to remain at 80km/h. See map below for details.

Over the coming two weeks in preparation for the above changes, nightly changed traffic conditions, including some overnight ramp closures, will be in place in this area. See below for full details.

Night works

Night works normally occur Sunday to Thursday nights from 6pm to 6am, with traffic impacts from 8pm to 4am. This week, we will also be working tonight from 6pm to 6am. Some night works will occur behind construction barriers with no impacts to traffic expected. Other works will require some changed traffic conditions with reduced speed limits in place.

Tonight – Friday 31 January 2020

  • Robina (Exit 82) to Varsity Lakes (Exit 85)
    • Asphalting will occur behind construction barriers on the western side of this section tonight for the future northbound lanes. No traffic impacts are expected from these works, however local residents may hear some noise from the use of heavy asphalting machinery.

*Next week – Sunday 2 to Thursday 6 February 2020

  • The Link Way, Mudgeeraba
    • A lane closure will be in place on Wednesday and Thursday nights on Railway Street south of the Caltex driveway to carry out underground electrical works.
      • Signage and traffic control will be in place and motorists will be directed one way at a time.
  • Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) to Robina (Exit 82)
    • The Robina (Exit 82) northbound on-ramp will be closed on Sunday night for underground electrical works across the ramp.
      • Motorists wanting to enter the motorway at this location will be detoured to Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) northbound on-ramp.
      • Local residents may hear noise from these works due to the use of some heavy construction machinery.
    • The Robina (Exit 82) southbound on-ramp will be closed on Monday night for the installation of electrical cables across the ramp.
      • Motorists wanting to enter the motorway at this location will be detoured to the Varsity Lakes (Exit 85) on-ramp.
    • A nightly lane closure will be in place on the northbound side of this section for the installation of a large concrete drain in the median.
    • Electrical works will occur on Tuesday night on Highfield Drive near the Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) off-ramp roundabout. Any traffic impacts are expected to be minor with motorists diverted around the works zone.
    • Brief intermittent delays of up to 5 minutes will occur on Thursday night on the Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) northbound off-ramp. These delays are required as a safety precaution when light poles are craned into place near the ramp.

*The week after – Sunday 9 to Thursday 13 February 2020

  • Mudgeeraba (Exit 79) to Robina (Exit 82)
    • A shoulder closure will be in place on The Link Way (Exit 80) northbound off-ramp on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 February with motorists diverted around the works. This shoulder closure is required for underground service works on the ramp.
    • A nightly northbound lane closure will be in place to complete drainage works in the median.
    • The above-mentioned southbound traffic changes are currently planned to occur over two nights on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 February. Each night as these changes are made, changed traffic conditions will be in place including:
      • on Wednesday night, all southbound motorway traffic will be detoured onto the Robina (Exit 82) off-ramp and on-ramp. This detour is required due to a wide range of works required in the traffic lanes.
      • on Thursday night, the Robina (Exit 82) southbound off-ramp will be closed to extend the ramp to the new alignment.
        • Motorists wanting to exit the motorway at this location will be detoured to the next available exit at Varsity Lakes (Exit 85). Motorists may also wish to plan their journey and use a previous exit and the local road network to reach their destination.
  • Robina (Exit 82) to Varsity Lakes (Exit 85)
    • Nightly asphalting will occur behind construction barriers on the western side of this section. These works are required for the future northbound lanes. No impacts to traffic are expected during these works, however local residents may hear some noise from the use of heavy construction machinery.

*It’s important to note – the above dates are based on current planning and conditions. Many factors, including inclement weather and unfavourable construction conditions, can cause our works program to change. Emailed Traffic Alerts and SMS messages sent to mobile phones (for those registered) are provided prior to significant traffic impacts to alert motorists. Further information will also be provided in upcoming community email updates (currently provided fortnightly).

Day works continue Monday to Friday from 6am to 6pm. Some works may also be required outside of these hours including at Stapley Drive bridge with early morning concrete pours occurring from 3am to assist the curing process.
