A FRESH START FOR QUEENSLAND
Works to begin on Mudgeeraba Creek Causeway

  • Major works to commence to raise the Austinville Causeway, after it was damaged during Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred
  • The works will raise the causeway 2.5m and improve approaches
  • Works will improve flood resilience and reduce the likelihood of the local community being cutoff after wet weather events.

The Albanese and Crisafulli Governments are getting on with the job of upgrading the Mudgeeraba Creek Causeway, with works set to begin later this month to deliver a safer, higher and more flood resilient crossing on Gold Coast–Springbrook Road.

The new causeway will be wider and built 2.5 metres higher than the existing structure, which was damaged during Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025.

Once complete, it will significantly reduce flood-related closures and improve reliability for local communities, keeping locals connected when they need it most.

The existing causeway is regularly inundated during rainfall, forcing residents of Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook to take long detours via Pine Creek Road and Nerang – Murwillumbah Road.

The new causeway will commence next month and will be built upstream of the existing crossing with Doval Constructions Ltd awarded the construction contract.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the upgrade was about delivering certainty for local residents.

“Raising the Mudgeeraba Creek Causeway means fewer closures, safer travel and better access for the people who rely on this road every day,” Minister Mickelberg said.

“This is a practical, long-term solution that strengthens the network and helps communities recover faster after severe weather.

Member for Mudgeeraba, Ros Bates, said the start of works on the Austinville Causeway showed the Crisafulli Government was getting on with fixing longstanding problems.

“Residents here have dealt with detours and uncertainty for years whenever the creek rises, and they’ve been raising this issue for just as long,” Ms Bates said.“This causeway has flooded again and again, but despite locals calling for action, nothing was done.”

“This upgrade is about finally getting on with the job, reducing disruption and giving locals a more reliable crossing.

Traffic will be maintained under single-lane conditions with reduced speed limits during work hours (6am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday).

Occasional Sunday or night works may be required, with advance notice provided to the community.

The project is jointly funded by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), with additional Crisafulli Government funding delivering a stronger, more flood resilient structure.

More than 25 additional recovery sites will also be restored along Gold Coast–Springbrook Road and Springbrook Road following damage from the South Queensland Severe Storms and Rainfall events between December 2023 and January 2024. Works at these sites will commence in the coming months.
