Funding to continue free legal support

The LNP will protect the southern Gold Coast’s most vulnerable community members and improve domestic violence support by providing funding certainty to My Community Legal if elected next month.

LNP Shadow Minister for Women and Member for Mudgeeraba Ros Bates said the $800,000 of funding would ensure domestic violence victims on the southern Gold Coast receive the free legal support they need.

“The LNP’s commitment will provide free, top-level legal services to those who need but cannot afford a lawyer through My Community Legal services, whose clientele are overwhelmingly those who are experiencing domestic and family violence,” Ms Bates said.

“Under Labor, DV victims have been vulnerable for years with a lack of adequate funding leaving them to fend for themselves.

“Labor’s failures have overseen $20 billion-plus in project cost blowouts that could have delivered grassroots funding like free legal support for at risk women; but their abysmal record on DV and repeated refusals to fund My Community Legal have hurt those who needed help most.”

Ross Lee from My Community Legal Gold Coast said he welcomed the announcement.

“This will be a game changer for our service which was facing closure without ongoing funding,” Mr Lee said.

Ms Bates said the LNP will restore a government that works for you, with the Right Plan for Queensland’s Future.

“Queenslanders should have a government that delivers the programs and services needed for the State’s future, supporting our communities,” she said.

“Queenslanders can vote for more funding for domestic violence victims and a government that works for them, by voting LNP next month.

“Only the LNP stands ready to deliver a fresh start for Queensland.”
